The Serpent is an 8-part true crime drama series shown on BBC One and available on BBC iPlayer. It tells the story of real-life fraudster and serial killer Charles Sobhraj who preyed on young tourists who were on the 1970’s Asian “Hippie Trail” where he would befriend them, drug, rob and murder them, along with his female accomplice Marie-Andrée Leclerc.
The cast are excellent, with Charles Sobhraj played by the excellent Tahar Rahim, and his accomplice Marie-Andrée Leclerc played by Jenna Coleman. There are good performances too by Billy Howle who playes the dutch diplomat Herman Knippenberg who becomes obsessed with indentifying and catching the elusive Sobhraj.
What we really loved about the show though was the wonderful location and costumes, as it really did an excellent job of taking you back to 1970’s Bangkok, having been filmed on location there. Well worth a watch.
