This particularly gruesome method of torture involved placing a starved rat inside of a bucket, strapping it to the chest of the victim and burning the end of the bucket with a torch in order to force the rat to claw into the flesh of the victim in an attempt to escape the heat. The desperate rats were recorded to have gnawed into the very bowels of their victims, effectively eating them alive. More disturbingly, it is recorded as having been used until very recently in many of the old military dictatorships of South America, the last of which was dissolved in the 1990s. In these countries, a method of arguably more brutal rat torture was concocted in which the rats would be inserted through the victim’s nether regions by way of a small metal tube, forced to burrow deeply inside of them as their only means of escape.
