The famous poster of Lord Kitchener pointing with the words WANTS YOU, or YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU is one of the most famous recruitment posters in history, and remains one of the most iconic images of World War One.
Part of its effectiveness was later credited to its ‘differential rotation effect‘ whereby Kitchener’s eyes and pointing hand appear to follow the viewer and point directly at them, so even people not face-on with the poster (so stood to the left or right of it) would still see him looking and pointing directly at them.
