A psychological torture that involved placing the victim into a cage roughly the size of their own body. The cage would then be strung up in a highly public place, for example from the city walls, where it would overlook the city streets. For a sadistic passtime, civilians would often pelt the prisoner locked in the cage with projectiles: rotten fruit, faeces, stones etc., and this would be considered as part of the punishment. Victims would often be left to die in these cages, slowly, of thirst and starvation, and after they had passed birds of prey were known to gnaw and chew on their corpses.
