Probably the most famous of all torture methods, the Crucifix was a Roman torture method that remained in use for centuries after it was employed in the trial and execution of Jesus Christ. The method involved nailing a victim by their hands and ankles to a cross-shaped, usually wooden object just outside of a city’s perimeter, where individuals would be left for days and weeks on end without food or water. As with the aforementioned coffin torture, the persecuted were often left at the mercy of the locals and wildlife, and were known for being abused in a much similar fashion before they eventually died of deprivation and their bodies were left to be devoured by birds and insects.
