Top Box Office Hits in the UK 2021

#1 No Time To Die

In first place at the UK box office by quite a considerable margin is the latest instalment featuring Daniel Craig as the promiscuous and deadly British superspy, James Bond. Having held the role as Bond for over a decade, Craig has announced that this is to be his last film playing the character, with a new actor to be selected for the next movie. The James Bond films have always been immensely popular in the UK and abroad, and No Time To Die was no exception, bringing in a staggering $127 million at the British box office.

#2 Spider-Man: No Way Home

Spider-Man: No Way Home came in second although not quite close to the top, bringing in around $86 million from UK cinemas. The latest film features a crossover of all the current and previous Spider-Man actors and villains. It is the latest stage in the story of Tom Holland's MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) Spider-Man which has been ongoing since the first film release, Homecoming.

#3 Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is the 25th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, which began with Iron Man all the way back in 2008. Featuring acclaimed asian actors such as Michelle Yeoh and Benedict Wong, the film released to a generally positive reception among critics and fans however it failed to garner as much attention as other more well-known entries in the MCU. Nonetheless, it still ranked third in the UK box office, bringing in around $29 million from theatres.

#4 Dune

The sci-fi fantasy epic Dune follows the story of the young prodigy Paul Atreides, the scion of the legendary House Atreides renowned across the galaxy for its military might and its loyalty to the emperor. Featuring some absolutely amazing visuals and SFX, along with a masterful soundtrack by the renowned film composer Hans Zimmer (previous works Inception, Interstellar, Gladiator), and upcoming actor Timothée Chalamet as Paul, Dune was considered a huge success by fans and critics alike, as well as a faithful adaptation of the source material novel written by Frank Herbert. It made $28 million in the box office.

#5 Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway

Peter Rabbit returns to cinema with Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway. While it received mixed reviews from critics and fans of the first film who felt that it somewhat lacked as a sequel, the movie did generally well at the British box office and should definitely be considered a success. These family-friendly adventure-comedy flicks have proven fairly popular among cinemagoers, raking in $27 million during its run, placing it at number 5 in the UK box office of 2021 just under Dune.

#6 Black Widow

Black Widow released as the 24th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise. It follows the story of Natasha Romanov, codename Black Widow, a former spy of the Soviet Union's intelligence agency (The KGB) who goes on a journey of self-discovery to confront her past after finding out that her ex-handler from the Cold War is still alive. The movie was long awaited by fans, who have been desperate to see more of Marvel's iconic femme fatale. It released to generally favourable reviews and  a positive (though maybe underwhelming) box office performance, coming in 6th place with $25 million.

#7 Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Venom: Let There Be Carnage released to a mostly negative reception but still managed to pull off an impressive box office performance in the UK, ranking at number 7. The film features Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, reprising his role from the first Venom film to release a few years prior, and Tom Holland as Peter Parker AKA. Spider-Man. What is interesting about this film is that despite the fact that it is not apart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Holland maintains his role as Peter Parker. Venom: Let There Be Carnage made $24 million in UK theatres.

#8 Free Guy

Free Guy is an ambitious movie that portrays a banker who one day awakens to the realisation that he is an NPC (non-player character) in an extremely deadly open world video game. It features a number of popular video game streamers and content creators from websites such as Twitch and Youtube, including Jacksepticeye, Pokimane, Lazarbeam and others. It ranked 8th place grossing $23 million.

#9 F9: The Fast Saga

F9: The Fast Saga sped into the box office last year, arriving at 9th place. The movie which is all about cars (particularly fast ones) is the latest instalment in the ongoing The Fast & The Furious action movie series, picking up with the story of Dominic Torreto from where the previous movie left off. It made $22 million at the UK box office.

#10 Eternals

Eternals released as the 23rd movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It follows the story of the Eternals, a race of superhumans who lived on earth far before the current timeline of the MCU and who helped to shaps its history and civilisations. The film features several popular actors from Game of Thrones, noticeably Kit Harington and Richard Madden, as well as the former One Direction singer and pop idol, Harry Styles. At 10th place, it made $20 million during its run in the box office.
